Curtis Jernigan - rest in peace

Curtis Dean JERNIGAN (Curt) was born July 17, 1945 to the late Ina Lou McNair Jergnigan and Willie Lee Jernigan. He was predeceased by sisters, Willie Mae, Lillie Mae, Helen C., and brother Joseph. Curt entered into rest on December 21, 2008. He is survived by a devoted and loving wife of 40 years, Rosia H., three children, Valeria, Adero (Tony) and Kwesi; fourt brothers, Willie J., Sidney D. (Catherine), Wilbert M. (Margaret), John A. (Mattie), one sister, Ina Ruth; one grandaughter, Tiffany A.; one aunt, Bessie, one sister-in-law, Louise; special friends Robert, Ivan, Theo, John (Monk), Aaron, Saint T.; two devoted nephews, Sidney Jr. & Joseph; his school family at Oliver Elementary; the Class of 1963 and a host of other relatives and friends. After graduating from Carver High School (class of 1963), Curt received his B.S. and M. Ed. from Alabama State University, Montgomery. He furthered his education by attending the University of Central Florida, Auburn University, Harvard University and Tuskegee Institute. Most of his career was spent working for the Russell County Board of Education, beginning in 1984 until his passing. He served as the Director of the ALC, Principal of Pittsview and Russell Elementary, and as Asst. Principal of Oliver, Mt. Olive and Russell County High and Bullock County High. He was also a writer and staff member of the HRDC program at Tuskegee Institute. Curt was currently serviving as Chairman of the Bullock Co. Democratic Party Exec. Committee, Board Memeber of Alabama New South, 2nd Vice President of the Old Pine Grove District Sunday School and BTU, Treasurer of South Bullock Co. Water Authority, Secretary of Bullock Co. Voters League and Chairman of the Deacon Board and Sunday School teacher at Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He has also served on the Bullock Co. Board of Education, Rural Development Center Organization and Bullock Co. Development Authority. He was a founding member, and served as President of the Alabama New South Coalition. He was a member of the NEA, AEA, Russell Co. Education Assoc. and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Curt was also a founding member of the Bullock County Voters League and served in all official capacities.
