SYRACUSE, NY - The daycare provider for a 20-month-old girl who was found beaten to death in her home has been charged with failure to report suspected child abuse, a misdemeanor.
Diane Shakir, who runs All-Star Daycare on Hatch Street, took photos of Imani Jennings' bruises but did not report the suspected abuse as required by law for licensed daycare providers, said Onondaga County District Attorney WIlliam Fitzpatrick.
A new employee at the daycare first reported the bruises to Shakir who decided not to call authorities, Fitzpatrick said. Shakir told Jennings' mother, Cherron Patterson about the bruises, Fitzpatrick said. Patterson stopped bringing Jennings to the daycare that day, Syracuse Police Chief Gary Miguel said.
About two weeks later, Jennings was found beaten to death in her Fage Avenue apartment. Patterson's boyfriend, Anthony A. Weakfall Jr., 15, has been charged with second-degree murder. Patterson is facing charges of second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
