Hallie D. Murphy, 74, of Montgomery, Ala., and a former resident of McComb, died Dec. 7, 2010, in Montgomery.
Visitation is 4 to 7 tonight at Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home and continues 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Baptist Church until services there at noon. The Rev. R.T. McGowan, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in East Fernwood Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Murphy was born July 16, 1936, in McComb to Noah and Sallie Mae Downs.
She received a bachelor’s degree from Chicago State University in 1977. She worked for the Chicago public school system for nearly 20 years. She retired in 1994.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Dr. Norma D. Carson; and one brother, Dr. Marvin Downs.
Survivors include her husband, Eleson Murphy of Montgomery; a son and daughter-in-law, Kelvin and Karen Murphy of South Holland, Ill.; a granddaughter, Kara Murphy of Bowling Brook, Ill.; three brothers including her twin, Willie Downs, Noah Downs Jr. and wife Mae, all of Chicago, and Johnnie and wife Betty Downs of New Brunswick, N.J.; one aunt, Nercile Bonner of McComb; one uncle, Cecil Hodges of Gary, Ind.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
