Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said Cortney Dowdell and Andrew Hart, both 21, died after the vehicle they were traveling in left the roadway and slammed into a tree in the 3900 block of Wimberly Road in Auburn. The crash happened around 7pm.
Dowdell, a Waverly resident, was killed instantly and pronounced dead on the scene by Chief Deputy Coroner Gene Manning. Hart was rushed by helicopter to a Columbus, Georgia hospital where he died in the Intensive Care Unit Sunday afternoon.
Two other victims inside the car, driver Cortellius Meniffee, 22, and Brandon Patrick, 23, were also injured. Meniffee was treated at the scene and released. Patrick was rushed to East Alabama Medical Center where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit.
The coroner's office said it doesn't appear that any of the victims had on a seatbelt when the crash occurred.
