Dr. Asher Black

March 14, 2012 Dr. Asher Black, 95, of Boca Raton, FL, formerly of Syracuse, died Wednesday, March 14, 2012 in Florida. Dr. Black was a physician with an office on West Onondaga Street until his retirement in 2006. He served as president of St. Joseph's Hospital. Dr. Black was the first physician to use artificial cardiac resuscitation out of the hospital. He was 1937 graduate of Syracuse University and a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Societies. While at SU, he was on the varsity boxing team from 1933-1935. A University School of Medicine graduate and received the "Letter of Distinction" from Syracuse University. Dr. Black served throughout WWII in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was discharged with the rank of major in 1946. He was an avid golfer and former member of LaFayette Country Club and member at Boca Wood Country Club in Florida. Dr. Black was a member of the Onondaga County Medical Society, former member of Temple Adath Yeshurun, Philo Mt. Siani Masonic Lodge, and honorary chair of the Syracuse Jewish Federation. He was predeceased by his parents, Meyer and Rose Black; brother, Dr. Howard Black; and sisters, Celia Jacobs and Natalie Kruth. Survived by his wife of 66 years, Lilly Black; sons, Dr. Harry (Lisa) and Dr. Harvey Black; daughter, Suzanne Black; brother, Dr. Martin (Ethel) Black; brother-in-law, Dr. Ike (Berte) Muslow; and five grandchildren. Services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2012, at Birnbaum Funeral Chapel, 1909 E. Fayette Street. Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 10 to 11 a.m., prior to the service at the chapel. Burial will be in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery.
