rest easy Teddy

O' Danny Boy arrived for the funeral, a downgraded storm, draped in thick clouds of an unusual hue, slinging briny raindrops.

.
Danny has grieved all night.

Someone near lights the somber sky with tributes now and then.

Danny’s rumbling thunder and Teddy's tributes make musing music.

It's blanket weather suddenly.

Neighbors close their windows as I close mine.

The wayward saints of Boston weep.

It’s time to “lay down and let the Lord do His work”.

Lost Sounds: Blacks and the Birth of the Recording Industry, 1890-1919

I bargained with life for a penny

I bargained with life for a penny
And life would pay no more
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store

For life is just an employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.

I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have willingly paid.

Sadie Simon of Opelika

SADIE SCHULWOLF SIMON 1916-2009 Sadie Schulwolf Simon, 93, of Opelika, AL, died August 12, 2009, at East Alabama Medical Center following a short illness. She was born January 31, 1916, to Morris and Gussie Schulwolf of Montgomery. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years Albert Simon and her first husband, Louis Koplon. Affectionately known as "Miss Sadie," she was a longtime part of the Opelika business community and was highly respected by all. Her passion for business began when she was just five years old, helping her father with his fruit stand business in Montgomery. Later, with her husband Albert, they owed several retail stores including Albert's Department Store and Kay's Shoe Store in downtown Opelika. She and Albert made local history when they hired and trained the first African American woman as a sales clerk in their store. She was encouraged by the local business community in her candidacy for Mayor of Opelika. In later years, she was President of SIRCO, a real estate development firm. Mrs. Simon continued working at the company along with children, Rosalyn and Jeffrey, on a daily basis until her hospitalization last week. Most recently, Mrs. Simon was honored by Opelika Mayor, Gary Fuller, who dedicated January 31, 2009, as "Sadie Simon Day" in Opelika by hosting a breakfast in her honor at City Hall on her 93th birthday. She was noted for her special variety of home cooked foods including cheese straws, cornbread, and fried chicken. She also loved to make pepper jelly, cakes and cookies which were cherished by all those who received them. She continued trying new recipes even at age 93. Miss Sadie would never leave home without wearing her beautiful dangling earrings, jewelry, full makeup and not a hair out of place. Her beautiful complexion was also noted by anyone who met her as she always looked young, radiant and never her actual age. The most important loves in her life were her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchild who all adored her dearly. She was a true "Southern Belle." Sadie Simon is survived by four children: Norman Koplon and family friend Catherine Malicki of Atlanta, Elaine Koplon Kirschner and her husband Dave of Atlanta, Rosalyn Rosenblum of Opelika, and Jeffrey Simon and his wife Gwen of Opelika. Her grandchildren Lane Koplon, Sandi Kirschner Krick and her husband Lenny, Jared Kirschner and his wife Brandy, Joshua and Alyssa Rosenblum and Paul and Aaron Simon, as well as great grandson Cade Krick. Also surviving is her sister Esther Fleischman and brother Max Schulwolf both of Montgomery as well as nieces and nephews. Mrs. Simon was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom in Auburn. Graveside services Friday August 14, 2009 at 10a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery in Auburn. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Congregation Beth Shalom at P.O Box 1888 Auburn, AL, 36831 or a charity of your choice. The family will observe the traditional mourning at the home of Jeffrey and Gwen Simon. Funeral arrangements: Fredericks Funeral Home of Opelika

Limbaugh compares Democrats to Nazis

In the latest skirmish in the increasingly vicious war over healthcare, Democrats are complaining loudly about conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh comparing them to Nazis.

On his show today, he criticized Democrats' proposals on healthcare, the environment, and other issues. Limbaugh also complained that anyone who disagrees with President Obama and Democrats is demonized, when Obama's grassroots supporters are the real "brownshirts." And on Limbaugh's website, an Obama healthcare logo is put side-by-side with a Nazi symbol.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee this afternoon called on House Republicans to condemn Limbaugh, who though he is not an elected official is seen as a leading Republican.

“Rush Limbaugh’s comparison of the Democratic Party to the Nazi Party in World War II is as disgusting as it is shocking. Limbaugh’s use of the Nazi swastika in attempting to make a tasteless political comparison has no place in the public discourse," DCCC spokeswoman Jennifer Crider said in a statement.

“At a time when families need real solutions to rebuild the economy and make health care more affordable, Rush Limbaugh is attempting to sidetrack the important debate through his use of symbols that are synonymous with murder and intolerance. Americans deserve better."

The Town Hall Mob - Paul Krugman - NYT Op Ed

"...So this is something new and ugly. What’s behind it?

Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, has compared the scenes at health care town halls to the “Brooks Brothers riot” in 2000 — the demonstration that disrupted the vote count in Miami and arguably helped send George W. Bush to the White House. Portrayed at the time as local protesters, many of the rioters were actually G.O.P. staffers flown in from Washington.

But Mr. Gibbs is probably only half right. Yes, well-heeled interest groups are helping to organize the town hall mobs. Key organizers include two Astroturf (fake grass-roots) organizations: FreedomWorks, run by the former House majority leader Dick Armey, and a new organization called Conservatives for Patients’ Rights.

The latter group, by the way, is run by Rick Scott, the former head of Columbia/HCA, a for-profit hospital chain. Mr. Scott was forced out of that job amid a fraud investigation; the company eventually pleaded guilty to charges of overbilling state and federal health plans, paying $1.7 billion — yes, that’s “billion” — in fines. You can’t make this stuff up...."

Elderly woman called 'habitual shoplifter' by Chicago police

The woman, whom Chicago police and the Cook County state's attorney's office identified as Ella Orko, 86, of Chicago, has been arrested more than 60 times in her life and has several aliases. Many of the arrests were theft-related, and police said the woman has 13 convictions.

Bond set at $10,000, prosecutors recommend she be placed on an electronic monitoring device

"Orko, who has been arrested 61 times including Sunday, was arrested for the first time in 1956 in Chicago for petty larceny and again in 1958 for grand larceny, according to the lieutenant.

“She’s a career shoplifter,’’ the lieutenant said.

Police said she has 13 convictions shoplifting, but Simonton, citing court records, could confirm only five, four in Illinois and one in Wisconsin. She said Okro's last conviction -- for retail theft in 2006 -- resulted in prison time before she was paroled in 2007."

Can't fault the Rapper this time.

Reverend Ike’s loss is great

Last week, one of our nation’s most enigmatic, controversial and influential figures passed away.

Rev. Frederick J. Eikerenkoetter II, better known as “Reverend Ike,” died at the age of 74. Ike, one of America’s first major televangelists, is largely remembered for drawing millions of Americans into his “gospel of health and wealth” that promised material success for true believers.

Although Reverend Ike has faded from the public conversation in recent years, his impact on American religious life has undoubtedly endured.

Over the past few decades, many American preachers have gained national prominence by offering their own updated versions of Reverend Ike’s gospel of prosperity. Some, like Creflo Dollar and Fred Price, flash expensive clothing, jewelry and cars with the reckless abandon of a Top 40 rapper. Others, like Joel Osteen, operate as life coaches whose scriptureless sermons are more devoted to selling self-help products than promoting righteous living. By reducing social misery to a lack of faith, these preachers reinforce the tired conservative argument that the problems of the poor are largely self-inflicted. They also promote the neo-liberal belief that all social problems can be resolved by expanding capitalism and increasing consumption. As a result, these churches displace traditional narratives about collective struggle, sacrifice or redemptive suffering with demands that the poor “get right” with God by accumulating things for themselves.

Unlike Reverend Ike, today’s cadre of prosperity preachers are not on the margins of mainstream Christianity. Instead they are becoming leaders of a mainstream church movement that has grown increasingly unresponsive to the social conditions of its members. One of the more disappointing examples of the New Black Church’s profit-driven cowardice came in January 2005 when President George W. Bush spoke to the First Baptist Church of Glenarden, a mega church in Maryland.

Pastor John Jenkins, an affirmative action advocate, refused to publicly challenge the president’s stance on the subject because he considered it inappropriate to take a stand against the president’s policy from the pulpit. By eliminating protest from the church’s agenda, except for when they’re echoing Republican talking points regarding so-called “moral issues,” these leaders effectively strip the church of its transformative potential while enhancing their own earning capacity. In the wake of Reverend Ike’s death, we must confront the possibility that many churches have gained the whole world but lost their souls.

Lobster War?

Lobster boats sunk in Maine harbor

OWLS HEAD, Maine (AP) - Maine law enforcement officials say two lobster boats were intentionally sunk in Owls Head amid growing tensions among lobstermen two weeks after a lobster turf war escalated into a shooting on Matinicus Island.

Marine Patrol Col. Joe Fessenden said lobstermen arriving to pull traps Wednesday morning discovered two boats were sunk and a third was half-sunk in Owls Head harbor.

Fessenden said the half-sunk boat was brought to shore, where it was determined that a pipe had been cut inside the boat allowing ocean water to fill the boat's bilge. Efforts were under way to lift the other boats from the harbor bottom.

Both lobstermen involved in the Matinicus shooting have ties to the Owls Head area. But Fessenden says investigators have found no connection between the shooting and the sinkings.
