Off-Duty Trooper Shoots Pit Bull To Save Boy (Hyde Park)

HYDE PARK (WBZ) ― An off-duty State Trooper shot a pit bull that was attacking a boy in Hyde Park Saturday afternoon.

State Police spokesman David Procopio said the trooper was on the front porch of his home on Ellis Street when he and his wife saw the dog "roaming unleashed on the street" around 2:20 p.m.

Moments later, the pit bull went after a 12-year-old boy who was on the sidewalk.

The trooper jumped in to save the boy, but he couldn't separate him from the dog.

"After several attempts to get the pit bull off the boy, the trooper discharged his personal handgun, striking the dog and causing it to release the boy," Procopio said in a statement.

"Preliminary investigation indicates the trooper fired one shot."

The boy was rushed to Carney Hospital where he was treated for injuries to his arms and legs.

Police are not releasing his name or condition.

"The dog was taken from the scene by an unidentified woman and is presently unaccounted for," Procopio said.

"Preliminary evidence suggests the dog's owner also lives in the neighborhood."

The trooper's name is not being released.

"Preliminary investigation indicates the trooper fired his weapon in defense of the child, to prevent more serious or even fatal injury to the boy," Procopio said.
